Destinations Guide - Hawaii

The idyllic islands of Hawaii… heaven on earth. These magical isles completely captivated the ancient explorers of Polynesia and today, they continue to enchant every visitor who has the privilege of setting foot on them. These are special places of rare beauty and remarkable history. Even their names conjure up mesmerising images: Oahu, ‘The Gathering Place’; Maui, ‘The Magic Isle’; Kauai, ‘The Garden Isle’; the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaii itself and Lanai, ‘The Pineapple Isle’.

Oahu: Aloha and welcome to the island of Oahu, where dreams are real and just waiting for you to experience them. Oahu has a unique rhythm, filling the air with sweet fragrances, exotic flowers, music and language; exhilarating one moment, tranquil the next. From sparkling beaches and dazzling nightlife to lush rainforests and secluded valleys. Adventure, history, romance, discovery. Oahu awaits you. Ready to inspire and rejuvenate you. The perfect day on Oahu. Pack a cooler with drinks and a picnic, and make sure you have your swimsuit, towels and sunscreen with you. Its time to explore this beautiful island. Head east from Waikiki through Kapi'olani Park. Follow the road that goes around the front of Diamond Head. As well as being Hawaii's most recognizable landmark, it has a couple of scenic overlooks where you can watch the surfers along the South Shore. Travel on through Kahala and Hawaii Kai to the rugged east coast of the island. Enjoy some fantastic snorkelling at Hanauma Bay before you continue on past the Blow Hole and Sandy Beach to Makapu'u, a perfect place to stop and enjoy sights of the real Hawaii. Mark Twain said that Hawaii is 'the most beautiful fleet of islands. The mountains plunge from the sky into the sea and on a clear day the palette of colour is breathtaking. If you are an accomplished body surfer, you will definately enjoy the challenge of Makapu'u Bay. Continue towards the North Shore and Hale'iwa, a little town on Oahu's North Shore that's filled with galleries, antique shops and great restaurants. The road hugs the coastline most of the way. There are parks, picnic stops, scenic overlooks and waterfalls for miles. This may be the most scenic drive on the island. Where the mountains touch the sea is always a special place. If you're looking for golf, there's a fantastic course at Turtle Bay Resort, but you may want to save that for another day. a little further a Sunset Beach - if surf is up here, it's awe-inspiring. It's time to head back to Waikiki, and what better way to end your perfect day on Oahu than taking a romantic walk along Waikiki Beach to watch the moon rise over Diamond Head. Waikiki has so many fabulous restaurants, offering a vast array of cuisine that no matter what your taste, you are sure to find something to suit your taste, you are sure to find something to suit your mood and palate. If you still have some energy left after such a busy day, there's certainly plenty of nightlife in this cosmopolitan resort.

Maui: Consistently voted the ‘World’s Best Island’, Maui is widely regarded as one of the most romantic and enchanting destinations on earth. It is known as the ‘Valley Isle’ and was the ancient playground for Hawaiian Royalty. The island is largely rural with a small and wonderfully hospitable population and a host of attractions and natural wonders, including 42 miles of beautiful beaches and the largest dormant volcano crater in the world. There's so much to see and do on Maui that you really do need to start early.....early enough to see the sunrise.....a very special sunrise, in fact, the most glorious sunrise you'll ever see, atop Haleakala Crater. The drive from Kaanapali is approximately two hours but it really is well worth it. On the way down from Haleakala, enjoy breakfast then take in the glories of this special area of Maui. Visit a flower farm in Kula, shops and galleries in the old cowboy town of Makawao and the award-winning Tedeschi Winery. Head north then east to Hana. The world-renowned 'Road to Hana' is a destination in itself! Passing through fun and funky Pa'ia Town, the windsurfer capital of the universe, this spectacular drive soon leaves the known world behind and transports you through rain forests, past waterfalls and black sand beaches to the 'emerald' village that everyone calls Heavenly Hana. Some of the most unforgettable scenery in the world can be found in Hana, including Seven Pools. The road from Hana is markedly different with starkly etched lava streams from Mt Haleakala's last eruption some 200 years ago creating a landscape of barren beauty flowing in natural stone sculptures to the sea. Now it's time to head west along the southern route to what was historically the capital of the Hawaiian Islands, the old whaling town of Lahaina. Although designated a National Historic Landmark, Lahaina has a great mix of many historic treasures and the up-to-date fun and excitement visitors are looking for from art galleries, every kind of restaurant imaginable and a thriving nightlife. Every Friday night is art Night when you can get 'up close and personal' with some of the thousands of extraordinary creative people who choose Maui as the ideal place to inspire their artistic vision. Kaanapali is a fabulous region of this island where you will find beautiful resort hotels, shopping and spectacular golf courses, all offering magnificent views across the warm Pacific waters. From December to April it is a common sight to spot humpback whales frolicking.

Hawaii (Big Island): The 'Big Island' of Hawaii is a paradise playground where visitors can enjoy a stylish lifestyle and at the same time, witness nature at its most stunning. Thousands of square miles form a leisure wonderland, featuring breathtaking beaches, tropical forests, snow-capped mountains and famously awesome active volcanoes. A visit to Volcanoes National Park, which has been described as a true wonder of the world, is the state's biggest attraction and is an absolute must. Within the national park's boundaries are a variety of scenic drives and 150 miles of hiking trails. Tropical Hilo, on the north eastern side of the island is exceptionally lush and offers sweeping views of majestic Mauna Kea. The flourishing Hilo-Hamukua Heritage Coast, between Honoka'a and Hilo is a 45 mile drive through scenic byways, hidden waterfalls, former sugar mill towns and plantation villages. Exotic tropical flowers are in bloom from south Hilo throughout the flower-growing district of Puna. Many of the gardens and nurseries are open for tours. The southern half of Hawaii's Big Islnad offers a different perspective with Kona Coffee Country and the southernmost tip in the United States - Ka Lae. The earliest voyages from Polynesia landed here and settled.

Kauai: The lush landscape of Kauai has led to it being called the ‘Garden Isle’, but it is also referred to as the ‘Island of Discovery’, and with good reason. A land of stunning natural contrasts, just waiting to be explored. Soaring emerald green mountains, sparkling rivers, canyons and caves, verdant tropical rainforests, a breathtaking coastline and secluded white sand beaches combine to make this magical place one of the world’s most relaxing locations. Kauai has enough to keep you busy for weeks but if you had to do everything in one day, here's how we would suggest you spend your time to see the very best of this specatucal island. Head fo the North Shore and the fame Napali Coast, exposed to the trade winds and big waves. Make sure you have your camera with you.......the views are simply intoxicating. A little further ahead is authentic old-time Hawaii in the form of charming little town of Hanalei. From the end of Hanalei Pier the mountains form a stunning backdrop on three sides, complete with rainforests, waterfalls, the mist hanging along the mountaintops and everywhere, rainbows. Most of the major resorts are located on the south side of the island along with many of the best beaches, golf courses and many activities. Drive south from the airport in Lihue towards the Poipu area, through the 'Tree Tunnel', into historic Old Koloa Town. Venture further along the south shore and spend time enjoying the exotic gardens and sweeping views of Kukuiolono Park. A few miles further down the road is the Hanapepe Lookout with fabulous views of the valley and the Hanapepe River. Waimea should be your next stop - the gateway to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific and Koke's State Park. The Canyon is one of the most famous natural features of the islands......over a mile wide, 10 miles long and almost a mile deep, its many scenic lookouts provide some of the most breathtaking views in the islands. Kauai offers visitors a vast range of recreational activities, from scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, fishing, golf, tennis, hiking, horseback riding, gardens, cultural exhibits and attractions and of course magnificent sightseeing.

  1. "The holiday you organised was amazing and definitely exceeded our expectations. Thanks so much for all your hard work, we loved every minute of it. All the hotels were perfectly placed for what we were after, and we definitely felt we got great value for money. It may be a while before our next big holiday, but we'll be sure to keep your details for when we get an idea of where to go. We'll also be sure to recommend you to all our friends who are looking to go away, and will enure they are all aware of how well this was organised by yourself (and how stress free this was on our part) . Thanks again for all you hard work." September 2011 from Nathan & Zoe, Hildonborough who visited Hong Kong and Fiji.

  5. "We had a great weekend thankyou. The hotel was in a great position - very easy to drive to, and only a short cab / bus ride into town. Also we used the boat to come back on sunday, which was fab. The rooms were big, clean and comfy - all you want them to be really! We did have a small issue with room keys at the start, but it was quickly rectified and all was good. Staff were very nice, friendly and helpful - lunch a little slow, but great when it arrived. All in all we had a lovely time - thankyou for your help with organising it." October 2011 from Nicki and girl friends who had a spa weekend in Bath.

  6. "Once again everything went according to plan and we had an excellent holiday. The lounge pass starts the holiday on the right footing, the flights were on time, the holiday rep. at the airport was welcoming and the hotel was great. The service was absolutely first class and there was an amazing selection of food at breakfast and dinner all presented in a very attractive way (similar to a cruise ship). The weather was extremely hot so we didn't attempt any excursions. We spent the time relaxing by the pool keeping in the shade as much as possible. No complaints at all you will be pleased hear. Thank you once again for your attention to detail. " October 2011 from Dorothy and Graham, Coventry who visited a luxury hotel in Tenerife.

  7. "Just to say...THANK YOU! For all your help and planning. We had a fabulous honeymoon and loved each part. I really liked the Argonaut in terms of location and the free glass of wine from 5-6pm every day. They were so friendly and helpful at the hotel and it made a great first stop. The Kauai Beach Resort had a great hot tub outside, good food and the concierge helped organise a number of trips for us. The room was a good size and we were given a free bottle of very nice champagne. Finally, the Plantation Inn in Maui, was wonderful. A great little location and it made our stay in Maui so enjoyable. Again a hot tub and breakfast was included - great chef. Such easy access to La Haina and the shops and away from the noise and scale of the big hotel complexes further up the coast. The four, four, four also worked well...had we had the time we would have loved to do four days in New York..would recommend that to anyone thinking of doing the same trip. So thank you again for your help, we really appreciated it and would use you and Top Drawer again!" January 2012 from Sarah & Ian, Chiswick who visited San Francisco before heading to the Hawaiian island of Kaui and then onto the Hawaiian island of Maui.

  9. "The holiday was lovely thank you. There was evidence of a lot of damage on our way up to our hotel from the airport, and the 4x4's were definitely needed! Once we were in Rodney Bay, there wasn't really much evidence of the hurricane. We found the Top Drawer service to be very helpful and we were kept up to date with information, following the devastation of the hurricane. We would definitely recommend Top Drawer to friends. Thank you for all your help." December 2010 from Karen & Simon, Tunbridge Wells who visited St Lucia very shortly after the hurricane in 2010.

  10. "It has to be said that we had a brilliant holiday not least down to Top Drawer!!! The arrangement between Top and Bottom Drawer is really convenient and just what i wanted. The route that you planned and the hotels that we stayed at were just right although it must be said that we preferred the national parks to the cities!! Thank you for a great level of service and I would definitely recommend your company in future." October 2010 from Emily & Philip, London who did a fly drive around California in a 2 door open top sports car visiting San Francisco, Yosemite, Death Valley and Las Vegas.
