Accessible Holidays Blog

Having been a teacher in a fully-accessible primary school, accessible travel has always interested me. Recently I met Mary from accessible-travel specialists Enable at a travel event, she was very enthusiastic and passionate about the service her company offers and very knowledgeable about her products. So I'm pleased to say we are now agents for Enable and really happy to be working with them to offer fully-accessible holidays so contact us to book your next trip.

Enable are specialists in fully-accessible holidays, so if you’re a wheelchair user; have limitations on your mobility or are a slow or wobbly walker, then what Enable offer could be perfect for you. The thing that’s different about Enable is that their service is so reassuringly comprehensive: their hotels, apartments and villas are personally audited and officially graded for accessibility and once you’ve booked you can relax knowing that your adapted room is 100% guaranteed!

Let’s look at each stage of going away on a holiday and how we and Enable make it fit the needs of wheelchair users or someone with limited mobility:

  • At the airport you might need special assistance, priority boarding or specific seating on the plane. Enable will inform airlines and airports of this in advance of your flights. They’ll also make sure you’re up-to-date with your entitlements as a disabled traveller. Did you know that if you have any special medical needs you can take an additional 10kg of medical luggage with you on holiday? (when accompanied by a letter from your doctor.)
  • Everyone needs a transfer from the airport to their hotel when they go on holiday, with Enable you get an adapted-taxi transfer, to and from your hotel included in your package price.
  • I’ve already mentioned that all Enable’s holiday accommodation is comprehensively audited and graded. This means that you will know the height of the loo; width of the doors; if you’ll be able to see over the balcony and if you have door runners to negotiate when you go outside. Essentially if you use a wheelchair or are used to flat floors at home, you’ll know exactly which specific adaptations you’ll have in your accommodation on holiday, and that’s guaranteed!
  • As well as the specifics of your room you can also rely on Enable to keep you fully informed about what to expect from hotel grounds and the immediate area. You’ll know where the dropped kerbs are or if the beach is accessible. Additionally you’ll know which adapted facilities like: wheelchair-friendly lifts; pool hoists; grab-rails and ramps are at your specific holiday property before you book. Enable also offer in-resort assistance to welcome you and act as your point of contact for help and support during your stay.
  • Enable can also arrange hire of a range of mobility equipment like mobility scooters, shower chairs, or hoists. They can also organise nursing care if the holidaymaker needs it or if the regular carer is having a rest too. The cost of nursing care is comparable to the cost in the UK and equipment hire isn’t expensive and includes delivery to your hotel.

Customers with accessibility problems know their needs best, so it’s great that the staff at Enable have the expertise to find holiday accommodation which is as accessible and fully-adapted for them as their own homes are. Every Top Drawer Holidays and Enable holiday is tailor-made and we strive to get the best value we can for our customers. All prices with Enable include: flights (you can travel with any air carriers), hold baggage, transfers and your adapted accommodation. Before you book, we will verbally go through a ‘must-tell’ document from Enable with you, which details the room-auditors findings: bed, toilet & door heights; what the entrance to the property is like; where the grab rails are; type of shower or bath; how to enter the pool and other useful comments. The ‘must-tell’ document is also posted to you; this adds an extra dimension to your peace of mind, on top of your 100% guaranteed adapted accommodation.

Enable organise travel to most parts of the world and offer all types of accessible holidays including: city breaks, cruise and escorted tours. For disabled travellers Barcelona is a very accessible city and Enable offer a Barcelona aparthotel with facilities just like home. Florida is also a great destination as the theme parks are all accessible. Some holiday types might seem out of the reach of travellers with special accessibility needs: maybe the idea of a cruise ship seems impossible or perhaps you are an older person who can’t face the challenges of travel. Enable actually offer a fully-adapted cruise ship which delivers the 5 star plus experience for everyone. If you haven’t travelled for a while you might like the idea of a trip closer to home, to Jersey. You could go by ferry or aeroplane, the journey’s short and there’s 23 regional UK airports who fly direct. When you get there, there’s a choice of accessible properties from Enable; one of which is a totally-adapted, dedicated property, offering daily excursions within the package price. Maybe you’re very adventurous and fancy an accessible tour of India – that's something else that can be arranged. I’m told that Indian people have a very can-do attitude and wouldn’t let something like steps get in the way of someone visiting a temple or missing a must-see sight!

If you need to consider accessibility in your holiday plans then get in touch with us and we’ll work with our friends at Enable to find the perfect place to meet your holiday requirements – Guaranteed!
