The remote primary rainforest of the Osa Peninsula in the far Southern Pacific coast holds the greatest variety of plants and animals of any protected area in Costa Rica. It is ideal for the more adventurous traveller with a real interest in wildlife and includes the wonderful pristine rainforest of the Corcovado National Park.
This area is one of the most impressive parts of the country for its vast areas of wilderness and primary forests, representing the heart of Costa Rica's ultimate frontier. Whether walking through the tropical humid rainforests hoping for a glimpse of sloths, monkeys or even tapirs, getting an insight into the rural life in small local communities, or snorkelling off small islands to spot dolphins, manta rays and colourful schools of tropical fish, a Corcovado tour is sure to enchant you and leave you with some wonderful memories.
The region - particularly Corcovado's surroundings, offers some of Costa Rica's most deluxe wilderness lodges. This is one of the most remote regions of Costa Rica with very little road access, so you arrive by air from San Jose and continue to your lodge by 4WD or by boat.
If you would like an expedition to two spectacular national parks in Costa Rica, it is possible to fly from close to the western part of Corcovado to Quepos in order to combine a visit to Manuel Antonio National Park.
