The pretty French island of St Barths (or St Barthelemy as it is known locally), could almost have been hewn out of the Cote d’Azur and towed across the Atlantic to take advantage of the warmer winters. It is elegant and sophisticated, with outstanding restaurants, glorious beaches and an exciting, yet discrete nightlife. The infrastructure is pure French, perfect roads, newly painted white lines and roundabouts to go round the wrong way. It seems odd early in the morning seeing people walking home in temperatures of 27°c with their ‘baton’ under their arm for their breakfast.
Two islands, one paradise. For anyone who enjoys stunning natural beauty, a holiday in St Kitts or its little sister Nevis cannot fail to exceed expectations. At the centre of St Kitts stands the spectacular, cloud-fringed peak of Mount Liamuiga (pronounced Lee-a-mweega), a dormant volcano covered by dense tropical forest. And on Nevis, too, the ground rises upward into a forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Yet nature is only a small part of the wonder of these small, relatively undiscovered destinations. The peaceful calm of St Kitts suggests nothing of the extraordinary history of the island. For centuries the two islands occupied a critical position, as a gateway to the Caribbean, in the European struggle for the West Indies.
